 우리가 발 딛고 선 세계는 잔인하리만치 결과 중심적이다. 목표를 넘어서면 왜 더 못 했냐 묻고, 못 미치면 왜 못 했냐 추궁한다. 아무리 정교하게 분석하고 성실히 과정을 밟았어도 결국 숫자 한 줄로 평가 받는다. 고단한 것이 당연하다.

 하지만 세상의 평가와 별개로, 결코 놓치지 말아야 할 사실이 하나 있다. 그 결정에 이르기까지 내가 어떤 분석을 거쳤고 얼마나 집요하게 파고들었는지, 내가 안다는 것이다.

 이 불확실한 세상에서 좋은 결정이 늘 좋은 결과를 보장하지는 않는다. 치밀한 분석이 아쉬운 결과로 돌아오기도 하고, 어설픈 판단이 운 좋게 성공하기도 한다. 그래서 오래 살아남는 사람은 통제할 수 없는 결과에 흔들리지 않는다. 대신 원칙을 지켰는지, 합리적 근거에 섰는지, 잃지 않을 자리에 있었는지를 스스로에게 묻는다.

 오늘의 숫자가 아쉽게 마침표를 찍었더라도, 그 과정에 쏟아부은 치열함은 사라지지 않는다. 당신이 알고 있기 때문이다.

The world we stand in is cruelly results-driven. Exceed the target, and they ask why you didn't do more; fall short, and they demand to know why you failed. No matter how carefully you analyzed or how faithfully you followed the process, in the end you are judged by a single line of numbers. It is only natural to be exhausted.

But apart from the world's judgment, there is one fact you must never lose sight of: that no one but you knows what analysis you went through to reach that decision, and how relentlessly you dug into it.

In this uncertain world, a good decision does not always guarantee a good outcome. Meticulous analysis can come back as a disappointing result, and a careless judgment can succeed by sheer luck. That is why those who survive for the long run are not shaken by outcomes they cannot control. Instead, they ask themselves whether they held to their principles, whether they stood on reasonable grounds, whether they placed themselves where they would not lose.

Even if today's numbers ended on a disappointing note, the intensity you poured into the process does not vanish. Because you know it was there.

If today, too, was exhausting, that is the surest proof that you thought harder than anyone in order to stay ahead. Trust that weighty process that you alone know. You are holding up far more solidly than you think.

 토이스토리5를 보고 나서 든 생각은 하나였다. 역시 구관이 명관이다. 화려한 신작 애니메이션이 매년 쏟아져도, 토이스토리가 서 있는 자리를 따라오는 작품은 아직 없다. 31년 전에 짜놓은 세계관 하나로 5편까지 관객을 울리고 웃긴다는 건, 그 세계가 처음부터 얼마나 단단하게 설계되었는지를 말해준다.

 이번 편의 무게중심은 제시에게 실려 있다. 그리고 장난감들의 오랜 적이 바뀌었다. 못된 아이도, 욕심 많은 수집가도 아니다. 이번 상대는 개구리 모양의 태블릿 '릴리패드'다. 아이의 눈과 마음을 통째로 빼앗아 가는 전자기기 앞에서, 장난감들은 처음으로 '나는 아직 필요한 존재인가'를 스스로 묻는다. 도태의 공포를 정면으로 건드리는 설정이라, 웃다가도 문득 목이 메는 지점이 많았다.

웃음이 나는 포인트

 그렇다고 시종일관 눈물만 짜내는 영화는 아니다. 이 시리즈의 진짜 강점은, 가장 슬픈 이야기를 하면서도 관객을 웃길 줄 안다는 데 있다.
 가장 큰 웃음은 버즈 군단이다. 똑같이 생긴 버즈들이 우르르 등장해 드론처럼 떼지어 날아다니는 장면은, 진지한 버즈 라이트이어 한 명만 알던 관객에게 통쾌한 배신감을 준다. 엉뚱하고 정신없는 이 무리가 화면에 나올 때마다 극장 곳곳에서 웃음이 터졌다. 
 또 하나는 관계의 즐거움이다. 오랜 시간을 돌아 버즈와 제시의 마음이 이어지는 대목에서는, 누군가의 마음을 얻는다는 게 얼마나 큰 기쁨인지 새삼 깨닫는다. 팍팍한 현실 속에서도 유머와 따뜻한 관계는 여전히 우리 곁에 있다는 걸, 이 장면들이 조용히 상기시켰다.

결국 눈물이 나는 진짜 이유

After watching Toy Story 5, one thought stayed with me: the old master still reigns. No matter how many dazzling new animated films pour out every year, nothing has yet caught up to the place Toy Story occupies. That a single world built 31 years ago can still move audiences to tears and laughter five films in tells you just how solidly that world was designed from the very start.

This installment places its center of gravity on Jessie. And the toys' old enemy has changed. It's not a mean kid, nor a greedy collector. This time the adversary is a frog-shaped tablet called "Lilypad." Faced with an electronic device that steals a child's eyes and heart entirely, the toys ask themselves, for the first time, "Am I still needed?" It's a premise that touches the fear of obsolescence head-on, so there were many moments where a laugh caught in my throat.

What made me cry

The first is the very fact that goodbyes are predetermined. Having to give your all to a love in the present, even while knowing you'll one day part, is no different in the world of toys than in the lives of people. The sense of loss the toys feel on screen directly mirrors the partings I've already lived through, or have yet to face.

The second is a longing for the days of being loved without conditions. As children, we held our toys close and played without a single worry. Now we live in constant unease, needing others' approval, having to prove we can do things well. I ache with longing for those days when I could simply be my whole self, no conditions attached—and this film touches on exactly that memory. The image of a toy struggling desperately not to be forgotten by its child overlaps with the back of an adult who must endlessly prove their usefulness to society.

What made me laugh

That said, this isn't a film that wrings out only tears from start to finish. This series' real strength is that it knows how to make you laugh even while telling its saddest story.

The biggest laughs come from the Buzz legion. A whole swarm of identical Buzzes charging in and flying in formation like drones delivers a delightful sense of betrayal to audiences who only ever knew one earnest Buzz Lightyear. Every time this goofy, chaotic crew appeared on screen, laughter broke out all over the theater.

The other is the joy of connection. In the moment when, after a long road, Buzz and Jessie's hearts finally reach each other, I was reminded anew of how great a joy it is to win someone's heart. These scenes quietly reminded me that humor and warm relationships are still right beside us, even amid a grinding reality.

The real reason it brings tears in the end

Toy Story has the power to tighten your chest just by facing the screen. The reason is clear. The toys' loneliness and their question—"Am I still of any use?"—resemble us today, who fear being left behind, all too closely.
